Exhibition publication celebrating Sterling Ruby’s solo exhibition A Relief Lashed + A Still Pose, at Xavier Hufkens, Brussels (18 June - 1 August 2020). The exhibition gathers a collection of the artist's wall-based assemblages made from repurposed pieces of wood that the artist had been collecting in his studio, as well as pieces taken from his mother’s barn in Pennsylvania, which he had disassembled after her death in 2014, and shipped to his studio in California. The origins of these works can be traced back to the WIDW paintings that were first exhibited at Xavier Hufkens in 2018. Digging ever deeper into his on-going fascination with the formal equation of the window, the artist presents a powerful ensemble of three-dimensional constructions in which painterly and sculptural techniques converge.
